So, Germany's been exciting lately. Still trying to ride that fine line between experiencing the country while I can, and not going broke and staving to death. Yesterday we found an Italian Trattoria that's going out of business and therefore gave me a whole pizza for 3.50 euro. At home, I've figured out every possible way to make müsli, yogurt, cucumbers and bread taste interesting. (Buying yogurt by the litre and müsli by the sack keeps me alive.)
I'm still swimming regularly, thankfully. The German Schwimmhalle never ceases to introduce me to a new cultural faux pas. Between the lane line arrangement changing daily, the old people floating in the same lanes that the athletes train in (AT THE SAME TIME?!), the billions of naked children in the showers, and the electronic watch I have to wear to open lockers and track my activity... yeah. It's pretty strange. One man was even doing fly DIAGONALLY across the pool, through the lanes, ducking under each lane line. Does.Not.Compute.
But! There was a girl who couldn't get her locker to work, and I got to have a conversation with her (in German!) about how to do it. My sentence structure still sucks and I definitely don't say things in the best way possible, but it's cool to understand and be understood.
Fußball, though, rules. I'm not much of a sports fan (outside of the ones I play myself), but you can't help but get excited when EVERYONE else is soo, so stoked on it. I watched the recent Germany/Portugal game the other day, and the pub went BERZERK after Germany won. People were driving backwards in the streets with the horn on and flags out the window, people were stopping traffic with their flags and doing the wave with them, and everywhere you went you could hear "Olee, olee olee olee! Super Deutschland! Super Deutschland!" As we were walking to a club afterward, I saw some guys with flag capes and whispered "Super Deutschland" to Stephanie, only to be greeted by these guys with another screaming round of the song. So crazy.
